A Modest Gesture

barely a woman
loose t-shirts, no bra
she walks around with her arms folded over her chest
as if no one can see her breasts
peaking from beneath dark linen.

a glass of wine at hand.
fucking through the walls.
baby, baby, baby.
no one cares what you hear or what you see.
as long as they know you'll keep hush.

wide eyes and a television set.
a duel-but the machine usually wins.
lighthearted white noise becomes more than just whispering.
i don't cover my ears any more.

old magic sends its followers into trance.
they're stuck like old records.
i'm stuck like old records.
"you're too young to be this empty"
spinning until all my insides tumble out like marbles might.

I walked past a soldier's memorial ceremony this afternoon outside of the Ohio Union. I stopped briefly, to pray for them. The only other time I saw anything like it was on youtube-Luke's memorial in Afghanistan. The boots. The rifle. The helmet. The flag. I'm surprised I'm still emotional about it. Can you miss some one you barely knew? I wish I could give him a hug and let him know how great of a person he was. He was one of the only few genuine people I've ever met.
