Art for Intellectuals
Perhaps it is the heart that moves us to create things, but I cannot agree that this can ever happen mindlessly. Just like how I cannot agree that there isn't place for intellectual art in this world. Accessibility should be considered, but by how much? Why dumb down great minds? It's frustrating for me to be surrounding by movers. They think like athletes. Their ideas are dizzying to me. I think in moving images, but not moving sensations. In the modern dance genre, sensations come first. "How does that feel? How does it make the audience feel?" I surround myself with thought patterns like these. Sometimes they work as a starting point, but then there comes a point when you have to ask yourself what your intention is. What's your idea? If you just want something to look good, that's decoration. Which is great for the home, but it lacks significance. Is there really an audience for that? And although I wish that humanity was a little better than that, I know deep down that some people actually like to look at nice, pretty things. Some people don't want the challenge. But then what's in it for the creator? Cash, probably. So many of my thoughts are completely theoretical, so my work tends to be. When I'm making, or even reviewing, I think "Why am I pursuing dance? Why am I pursuing video?" Because sometimes it feels like I'm beyond that. Only the process satisfies me when it's a telling one. For now, I think I might try to keep on reaching for that. Creative research to get closer to some sort of truth. I'll keep treading.
